Cable is expensive for retirees on a fixed income, but many older adults worry that streaming is complicated. With the right setup, IPTV can be simpler than cable. Here's how to set it up for a parent or grandparent.
Rule 1: One device, one app
Choose a single streaming device and a single player app. Remove everything else from the home screen. A Fire TV Stick with TiviMate works well because it looks like a classic TV guide. See TiviMate setup.
Rule 2: Open straight into live TV
In TiviMate, Settings → General → "Start on" → Live TV / last channel. The TV turns on and shows a channel—just like cable.
Rule 3: A short favorites list
Add only the 10–20 channels they actually watch, in a sensible order. Hide everything else. See favorites guide.
Rule 4: Simple remote
- Use the device's remote with TV controls (volume and power) so only one remote is needed.
- Turn on HDMI-CEC on the TV so the stick turns the TV on and off.
- Bigger, simpler remotes exist too—see remotes and keyboards.
Rule 5: Bigger text
Increase font size in the device's accessibility settings and in the player's interface options.
Rule 6: Make support easy
- Write a one-page cheat sheet: "Press Home → TiviMate → choose channel."
- Save our WhatsApp number in their phone so they can send a photo of any error.
- Use Ethernet so Wi-Fi problems don't happen in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
Is IPTV hard for older people?
Not with a simple setup. Once favorites are set and the app opens straight to TV, most people find it easy.
Can I set it up remotely for my parents?
Partly. Set up the device at your home first, then bring or ship it. Our support can help over WhatsApp.
What if they press the wrong button?
The Home button always gets back to the start. Pin the player app to the first spot on the home screen.
