IPTV Playlists Explained: Groups, Logos and Favorites

By the IPTV Prime US team · Updated October 14, 2026

Hands typing on a laptop keyboard

Your IPTV playlist is more than a list of channel names. Each entry carries information that your player uses to sort channels, show logos and match the TV guide. Understanding it helps you organize everything faster.

What's inside each entry

TagWhat it does
group-titlePuts the channel in a category (e.g., News, Sports, Kids)
tvg-logoLink to the channel logo shown in your app
tvg-idID that links the channel to its EPG guide data
tvg-nameName used for guide matching
Stream URLWhere the video actually comes from

The full format is described in our M3U guide and on Wikipedia's M3U page.

Groups: your best friend

Large playlists are split into groups (by country, genre or quality). Most players let you:

  • Hide groups you never watch
  • Reorder groups so the important ones are at the top
  • Lock groups with a PIN

Favorites: build your own channel list

  1. Long-press (or press Menu on) a channel.
  2. Choose Add to favorites.
  3. Reorder favorites in the app's favorites manager.

Step-by-step for popular apps: organizing favorites and hiding categories.

Missing logos?

If logos don't appear, the logo link may be outdated or your app may need a refresh. Reload the playlist; if it continues, tell support.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit my playlist myself?

You can hide, reorder and favorite in your app. Editing the raw file isn't necessary and won't update automatically.

Will my favorites survive a playlist update?

In most apps, yes—favorites are linked to channel IDs.

Why are there several versions of one channel?

Providers sometimes offer HD, FHD or backup versions. Pick the one that plays best for you and favorite it.
