What Is an M3U Playlist? How to Use an IPTV M3U Link on Any Device

By the IPTV Prime US team · Updated October 14, 2026

Hands typing on a laptop keyboard

If you've bought an IPTV subscription, you've probably received an M3U playlist link. It looks like a long, confusing web address—but it's actually a simple thing. This guide explains what an M3U is and how to use it in the most popular apps.

What is an M3U file?

An M3U file is a plain text list. Each entry has a channel name, a few details (logo, group, guide ID) and the address of the stream. Your player app reads the list and turns it into a channel menu. M3U8 is the same format saved in UTF-8 text encoding; it's also the format used for many individual live streams.

A single entry inside the file looks roughly like this:

#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.us" group-title="News",Example News HD
http://server.example:8080/user/pass/12345

You never need to edit it by hand—the app does all the work.

  • M3U link (URL): the app downloads the latest list from the server every time, so new channels appear automatically. This is what we give you.
  • M3U file: a downloaded copy saved on your device. It doesn't update, so it slowly goes out of date.

Always use the link when you can.

M3U vs Xtream Codes: which should you use?

M3U linkXtream Codes login
What you enterOne long URLServer URL + username + password
Loading speedSlower with big listsFaster
Movies and seriesMixed into one list (in some apps)Separate sections with posters
TV guideOften needs a separate EPG linkUsually automatic
Works inAlmost every player, including VLCMost IPTV players (not VLC)

Our advice: use Xtream Codes in IPTV Smarters or TiviMate, and keep the M3U link for apps like VLC that don't support Xtream.

How to add an M3U playlist

IPTV Smarters

Add user → Load Your Playlist or File/URL → choose M3U URL → paste the link → Add user. Full Smarters guide.

TiviMate

Add playlist → M3U playlist → enter the URL → Next → Done. Full TiviMate guide.

VLC media player (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone)

  1. Install VLC from the official VideoLAN website and open it.
  2. On a computer: Media → Open Network Stream (Windows) or File → Open Network (Mac).
  3. Paste your M3U link and click Play.
  4. Open the playlist view (Ctrl+L / Cmd+L) to browse channels.

VLC is great for a quick test, but it has no TV guide and gets slow with large lists. For everyday watching, a dedicated IPTV app is much nicer.

Smart TVs

Samsung and LG TVs need a compatible IPTV player from their official app store. Most of these apps ask you to upload the M3U link through their website using a code shown on your TV. Follow the instructions inside the app you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get an M3U link?

From your IPTV provider after you subscribe or start a trial. With IPTV Prime US, we send it on WhatsApp along with your Xtream login.

Can I use one M3U link on several devices?

You can add it to several devices, but the number of simultaneous streams depends on your plan.

What's the difference between M3U and M3U8?

Practically none for you: M3U8 is the same playlist format using UTF-8 encoding, which handles special characters in channel names better.
