Can You Watch IPTV on Roku? The Honest Answer (and 3 Workarounds)

Millions of Americans own a Roku, so it's natural to ask whether you can use it for IPTV. The honest answer: Roku is the hardest platform for IPTV. Roku tightly controls its channel store, and full-featured IPTV players like TiviMate or IPTV Smarters aren't available on it. But there are good workarounds.

Why Roku is different

Roku runs its own closed system. Apps ("channels") must be approved for the Roku Channel Store, and Roku doesn't allow you to install apps from outside it. You may find a few simple M3U players in the store from time to time, but they are usually basic, often lack Xtream login and a proper TV guide, and can disappear without notice.

Workaround 1: Screen mirroring from Android or Windows

Many Roku devices support screen mirroring from Android phones and Windows PCs.

  1. On the Roku: Settings → System → Screen mirroring and set it to Prompt or Always allow.
  2. Play IPTV on your phone or laptop using a player app (see Android guide or Windows guide).
  3. Use your phone's Smart View / Cast / Screen mirroring option and choose your Roku.

Downside: your phone must stay on, quality depends on your Wi-Fi, and there can be a small delay.

Workaround 2: AirPlay from iPhone or iPad

Many newer Roku models support Apple AirPlay. Some IPTV apps for iPhone let you AirPlay the video to the TV, so the phone works as the remote. See best IPTV apps for iPhone.

Workaround 3 (best): plug in a streaming stick

The most reliable solution is to plug a Fire TV Stick or a Google TV device into another HDMI port on your TV. You keep Roku for everything else and switch inputs for IPTV.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an IPTV Smarters app on Roku?

No. IPTV Smarters isn't available in the Roku Channel Store. Be careful with "private channel" codes promising it—they're not official.

Do Roku TVs support IPTV?

Roku TVs have the same limits as Roku sticks. Use mirroring, AirPlay or add a streaming stick to a free HDMI port.

Will my IPTV Prime US subscription work with a stick on my Roku TV?

Yes. Any Fire TV or Google TV device plugged into your TV works with our Xtream or M3U login.
